How to Succeed in your RESOLUTIONS?

Posted By: Admin

It is the beginning of the new year 2019. It is that time of the year, when we all review our life in the past year and make resolutions to make our life, going forward, more organized, efficient, healthy and what not. Most people use the New Year’s Eve as an important date to make key changes in their lives that they had always been hoping for, but never got done.

So be it that weight loss diet plan or that gym enrolment, all of these tend to wait for the new year. So is the case in many other aspects like saving more money, learning a new instrument, sport or language… etc.

But come 15th Feb, at least 90 % of all those who started the resolution would have given up on them. Why does this happen? Why do we give up on our RESOLUTIONS that we so dearly take up? What is the secret sauce that makes the 10 % succeed?

In our opinion…

  1. 1.Have only ONE RESOLUTION. We have limited willpower to change and having multiple resolutions means that you need a HUGE amount of willpower, which is rare. Take only the most important RESOLUTION for you.
  2. 2.Most resolutions fail because they remain that. To succeed the resolution must become a GOAL and that goal must then have a PLAN to achieve. Without all these factors a resolution is likely to fail. For example, if the resolution is to save more, then it must have a back end GOAL of the amount one would like to save. Say Rs 15,000 per month. And this must further be PLANNED into an investment that gets debited from the bank automatically on a monthly basis. Only then will this RESOLUTION to SAVE MORE have any chance of success.
  3. 3.RESOLUTIONS based GOALS must have short term review aspects that help the person celebrate short term success to keep motivation high. An example here, is if one is trying to loss 6 kgs in 6 months… then it needs to be tracked every week to a reduction of at least 250 gms of weight per week, using a diet/exercise plan. Once 1 kg is achieved, then, motivation is high to move to the next level… and so on.

Have only ONE RESOLUTION which must have a Specific Measurable Achievable Realistic Timebound (SMART) GOAL followed with a weekly PLAN to achieve the goal. And only then can we say that the Resolution had a chance of success.

So, make your RESOLUTION FAIL PROOF. HAPPY 2019.
